DREAM OR FATE
“We plan our lives according to a dream that came to us in our childhood, and we find that life alters our plans. And yet, at the end, from a rare height, we also see that our dream was our fate.”
Ben Okri – Nigerian Author
When we were in elementary school in the 1960’s my brother and I would come home from school, grab a piece of bologna and something to drink and prop ourselves up on our elbows on the living room floor. Then we would turn on our old black and white television after adjusting the tin foil on the rabbit ears of the antenna, slap the side of it to stop the lines from rolling and the fuzzy’s to straighten out just in time to hear the announcer say.
“Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Yes it’s Superman, strange visitor from another planet, who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of normal men. Superman, who can change the course of mighty rivers, bend steel in his bare hands, and who disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper, fights a never-ending battle for truth, justice and the American way.”
We couldn’t wait to get home from school everyday to watch Superman and to see our hero. I dreamed of being Superman and being able to do all the things that Superman could do. I didn’t go so far as putting a cape on like some of my friends did, but I was a Superman fanatic for sure. We all want to be like our heroes don’t we?
We dream and when we get older things somehow change, but as Ben Okri says our dreams do become our fate from that rare height. You might not become your hero, but you do become a hero in many ways to your wife, your husband, your mom, your dad, your son, or daughter, your brother, or sister, your friend, by the way you live your own life or perhaps by what you have done for them. Never stop dreaming!
